Description

One almost feels submersed under water looking at this astronomical phenomena. In June and early July we experience Noctilucent clouds in Northern Alberta between latitudes ±50° and ±70°. “Cloud” is a bit of a misnomer - it is caused by the angle of the setting sun late in the evening (during astronomical twilight) glancing off ice crystals high in the Earth’s atmosphere at altitudes of around 76-85m. This photo was taken at 1:12am with the orange of sunset still making an appearance due to the light sensitivity of the camera. They shimmer and shine not unlike light glancing off waves in a pool.
